In short, the most common method is to hold an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the Geneva Convention of 1949. You will need to present this document along with your valid home country driver's license and passport to legally drive in Japan.
If you hold a Swiss, German, French, Belgian, Monaco or Taiwanese driver's license, you can legally drive in Japan by simply following the instructions in the link above, obtaining a Japanese translation, and bringing it with your original license and passport.

In Japan, you can find free natural parking and camping spots along rivers, beaches, mountains and forests.
Generally speaking, as long as you see other people camping there, it's mostly okay. However, it's recommended to avoid parking overnight in cities, as you may be driven away or disturbed.
Tip: Try to search for places frequented by anglers; they usually know the best natural corners!
There are over 1,000 auto camping sites to choose from across Japan.
Use Google Maps to search for keywords such as "auto camp", "campground", "RV park", etc., and check out photos and reviews to find good options.

Michi-no-eki are over 1,000 rest stops across Japan with large free parking lots and clean toilets. During the day, these locations sell local food, souvenirs, and some even have hot springs.
You can stay overnight, but usually only for one night. It is not permitted to use tables, chairs, gas stoves or BBQ equipment in the parking lot, please abide by the usage regulations and etiquette.
Rest stops on highways have vending machines, toilets, and some also have gas stations and restaurants.Not suitable for overnight use。
